The thiophene azo dye comprises a formally charged portion and generally comprises at least two components: at least one chromophore component and at least one polymer component. The appropriate chromophore components are usually blue, red, violet or violet when exposed to UV light, or they can absorb light to reflect the same hue. These thiophene azo dyes are useful in providing a toning effect, for example, a whitening effect on the fabric, and does not accumulate over time and does not cause undesirable changes to the treated fabric. The thiophene azo dye is generally stable in the laundry detergent composition.
