生活污泥的的含水量普遍非常之高，现有的污水处理工艺采用热蒸汽对反应体内的污泥进行加热，起到污泥脱水的效果，但是由于反应体内的压力不稳，热蒸汽在反应体内的分布不是很均匀，大部分热蒸汽聚集在反应体内的上半部分，使得处于反应体下半部分的污泥的脱水效果不是很理想，另外在脱水过程中由于污泥堆内部的污泥不能很好的接触到热蒸汽，这使得污泥的整个脱水效果参差不齐，现有的工艺技术脱水污泥含水率一般在75％～85％，呈胶质粘结状，容易造成二次污染，而且在运输过程中也可能造成二次污染，已经不能满足环保的要求，而污泥后续处理手段如堆肥、焚烧、填埋等均要求含水率在60％以下，进一步降低污泥含水率是污泥减容减量、稳定化和无害化处置的重要基础，另外由于污泥当中有机物含量高，极易腐败，并产生恶臭，所以污泥的堆放和排放都会对环境造成污染，污泥中含有的大量病菌、寄生虫卵及病毒，极易造成传染病的传播。
