氮化硅球在粉体加工中有非常重要的应用。小尺寸的氮化硅球在氮化硅纳米研磨过程中不可缺少。氮化硅小球大部分使用滚球法生产。而母核在滚球法中有非常重要的作用，使用母核可以提高球的强度、密度及耐磨性，避免球体空心，而且采用母核成球可以缩短生产周期，减少使用过程中的破损。传统母核基本没有配方，经过原料-配料-烧成-破碎-研磨-烘干，得到氮化硅粉，然后在氮化硅粉中加入氧化钇、氧化铝、氧化镁等，再经过配料-造粒-成型-破碎-筛选-成核，共12道工序，最终形成母核。本工艺耗时很长，而且氮化硅烧结后，非常坚硬，破碎的过程浪费大量的人力物力，料也容易被污染，在成型时，必须造粒，否则不能成型或成型后分层，硬度非常低。而造粒要使用喷雾干燥塔，设备占地面积大，耗能高，粉尘问题也较难治理，一系列问题，造成氮化硅球成本高，也制约了氮化硅球的应用推广。
