汽车发动机在工作过程中，金属磨屑、尘土、高温下被氧化的积碳和胶状沉淀物、水等会不断混入机油，因此需要安装机油滤清器过滤掉这些机械杂质和胶质，以保持机油的清洁，延长发动机的使用寿命。常规机油滤清器一般串联在主油道中，其结构包括由内至外依次设置的带过滤通孔的中心管、褶皱的滤纸和外壳，外壳顶部设有螺纹盖板，螺纹盖板设有与滤纸对对应的进油口和与中心管对应的出油口，外壳底部设有旁通阀，这种机油滤清器在使用时，机油在油泵的作用下从进油口进入机油滤清器，经滤纸过滤，从中心管的过滤通孔渗出，再从出油口进入主油道。由于机油内的机械杂质和胶质的直径大小不一，使用这种以单一的微孔滤纸作为过滤材料的机油滤清器，较易发生堵塞，需要经常更换，并且堵塞后，为了保证机油的顺利循环，旁通阀在油泵的压力下被机油打开，此时流入的机油不但得不到滤纸的过滤，还会将原有被过滤后残留在滤纸的杂质重新冲入发动机，对发动机造成二次磨损。
