The present invention relates to a system and method for estimating an air flow constraint of an air filter of an engine. A control system for an engine including a turbocharger includes a constrained estimation module and an engine protection module. The constraint estimation module estimates the air flow constraint through the engine air filter based on a comparison between the measured temperature and the modeling temperature at the compressor outlet of the turbocharger. At least one estimate the air flow restriction operation based on the engine protection module: control of turbocharger and turbocharger control air flow control, engine fuel supply rate, and generates a warning signal of the vehicle driver.
