The present invention provides an optical routing mechanism, the optical routing mechanism can be used in such a wavelength router, the wavelength router is configured to receive input from the optical fiber light having multiple spectral bands, and to direct subsets of the spectral bands corresponding to the output optical fiber. A free space optics family provides an optical path for routing a spectral band between an input fiber and an output fiber. The light routing mechanism has a plurality of configurable routing elements to determine how each spectral band is guided. A common aspect of the optical routing mechanism is integrally coordinated with the end portions of the input and output optical fibers, allowing efficient planarization of some optical elements.
