染色机是一种对纺织物进行染色和前后处理的机器。其基本原理是利用加热染液对纺织物进行染色和前后处理。染色机在染色或前后处理过程中，根据需要给染色机进入冷水、热水或中水，并要保持一定的水位。目前，印染业中对染色机的多路进水及水位高低的控制，普遍是根据液位表来手动开启或关闭进水阀或排水阀。例如，现有的一种染色机，其包括染布缸体，在染布缸体内设有水位管，其上一侧则设有进出布口，染布缸体通过管道与加料桶、过滤器、染液循环水泵相连通，在染布缸体与染液循环水泵之间连接交换器，染布缸体一侧的管道上分路安装有热水阀门、冷水阀门和中水阀门。染色机工作时，根据需要开启热水阀门，对照液位表来关闭阀门；同样根据需要开启冷水阀门或中水阀门，按液位表控制阀门关闭，此过程皆需手动控制。当染色机作漂洗或换水工作时，开启排水阀排水同时又要保证染布缸体内的水位时，若采用手动控制阀门，会给工作人员带来不便，从而降低了生产效率。
