A method and system for setting up proximity detection and returns of a wireless device during the transition from a cell state to another cell state in a wireless device of a third generation wireless communication system. In the first cell state, the wireless device is equipped with proximity indicating function. The wireless device is switched from using a first cell state to a second cell state. Upon conversion from the first cell state, the wireless device receives a message from a base transceiver station and resets the proximity indicator setting according to the second cell state. This reset step allows a mobile device to retain an existing proximity indication setting, remove the proximity indicator setting, or stop the return proximity indication. In addition, the base transceiver station adjusts the proximity indicator stored in a base station in accordance with the second cell state.
