水轮机蜗壳，尤其是眼下大量运用于冷却塔能量回收的混流式水轮机蜗壳，一般采用铸钢分片铸造后焊接成型或直接钢筒分段焊接成型，后者的工艺路线为：钢筒分段焊接成蜗壳，将导叶，座环上盖下盖焊接成座环——>蜗壳进行粗加工，座环进行粗加工，粗加工后蜗壳与已经过一次焊接成型和一次粗加工的座环再焊接为一体，同时焊接支承脚，其存在焊接工作量巨大，焊接过程中应力集中，焊缝容易漏水等诸多缺点。该工艺依赖大量焊接，最终成品存在大量内应力，且导叶角度不一致，难以寻找加工基准，各批次水轮机一致性较差，性能难以保证。而目前采用的整体铸造工艺，虽然路线大大缩减，加工基准也更稳定，但整体铸造意味着难以像焊接一样灵活调整导叶的角度，一旦工况变化，需求不同角度的导叶，就需要连同座环、蜗壳一起重新开制一套不同的模具，投入成本相当大。
