乙醇作为一种基础的工业用原料，被大量的运用到各个行业中。3000t/a涂料用硝化棉(含醇＝25％，含氮＝12.6％)产品在后道乙醇驱水工序中，产生的65％的稀乙醇通常需要蒸馏提纯再利用，目前，对于乙醇的蒸馏技术，其原理是乙醇的沸点低于其它溶液的沸点，加热乙醇使其蒸发，通过冷凝成为液体，以此达到回收较高纯度乙醇的目的。硝化棉为白色或微黄色棉絮状，能溶于丙酮。学名纤维素硝酸酯，旧称硝化纤维、硝化棉。NC是一个聚合物，其分子量很大。它的分子式是C6H7O2(ONO2)a(OH)3-an，其中a为酯化度，n为聚合度。习惯上用含氮量百分数代表酯化程度，硝化棉具有高度可燃性和爆炸性，其危险程度根据硝化程度而定，含氮量在12.5％以上的硝化棉危险性极大，遇火即燃烧。常规的酒精蒸馏装置是蒸气棒直接放到含硝化棉的酒精里面直接加热使其蒸发，由于硝化棉属于易燃易爆物品，所以这样的蒸馏装置进行酒精蒸馏时容易引起硝化棉的爆炸，存在极大的安全隐患。
