目前的石油采掘设备的抽油杆是由多节钢制直杆通过较粗的螺纹接头连接而成，通常一口油井深度达2000～3000m，抽油杆多达300多根，抽油杆多为实心杆，重量较大，一般油井油管内径为62mm，(普通25mm实心抽油杆)螺纹接头处直径就55mm，周围所剩空间较小，加之整条抽油杆的直径反复变化，在抽油时，变化的抽油杆直径阻碍了油液的流动，使抽油阻力大大增加，浪费了抽油机的功率，降低了生产效率。另外，在因安装、更换、维修的原因插入或抽出整条多节抽油杆时，无法实现机械化作业，只能人工操作，劳动强度大，工作效率低，耗费时间长，生产成本高。多节的螺纹接头上下移动时对井管磨损大，缩短了井管的使用寿命；当需要油井除蜡、清井除沙时，还必须取出抽油杆，换入冲洗管，进一步浪费劳动资源、降低生产效率。
