督灸又称长蛇灸,是一种在督脉上施以隔药或隔姜或隔蒜灸的疗法，是在中医古老的疗法“铺灸”的基础上经过改良而来的，适用于缓解因风寒、邪湿所致的颈、肩、腰、腿等关节疼痛及软组织扭挫伤等所致的疼痛，尤擅治疗由强直性脊柱炎所引起的疼痛。其治疗方法：令患者裸背俯卧于床上，取督脉大椎至腰俞的脊柱部位。常规消毒后在治疗部位涂抹生姜汁，再在治疗部位上撒上督灸粉，之后在其上覆盖桑皮纸，然后再在桑皮纸上铺生姜泥如梯状，最后在姜泥上面放置艾柱，然后点燃，连续灸治后把姜泥和艾灰去除，用湿热毛巾把治疗部位擦干净。目前临床医务人员在为患者铺设梯状的姜泥时，通常放置好督灸盒（塑料制成的可弯曲的蛇形框）后，将姜泥放入到督灸盒内，再徒手将姜泥压平整，为了便于在上面放置艾柱，防止艾柱点燃后到处滑落，还要在梯状的姜泥中部压制出来一条沟，工作起来非常麻烦，同时在挤出姜泥汁时会将好多姜泥残留在姜泥汁中，徒手无法捞取干净。
