椅子是一种有靠背、有的还有扶手的坐具。据文籍记载，椅子的名称始见于唐代，而椅子的形象则要上溯到汉魏时传入北方的胡床。敦煌285窟壁画就有两人分坐在椅子上的图像；257窟壁画中有坐方凳和交叉腿长凳的妇女；龙门莲花洞石雕中有坐圆凳妇女。这些图像生动地再现了南北朝时期椅、凳在仕宦贵族家庭中的使用情况。尽管当时的坐具已具备了椅子、凳子的形状，但因其时没有椅、凳的称谓，人们还习惯称之为“胡床”，在寺庙内，常用于坐禅，故又称禅床。唐代以后，椅子的使用逐渐增多，椅子的名称也被广泛使用，才从床的品类中分离出来。因此，论及椅、凳的起源，必须从汉魏时的胡床谈起。由于折叠椅本身成为人们普遍的座椅，所以出现了形式与制作工艺的多样化。也由于折叠椅已经不包含太多的权力与尊贵的象征，所以这也导致了新功能、新设计的发展。19世纪末，折叠椅已是功利主义者所玩弄的设计品，出现了各种形式各种用途的座椅。凡椅子没有扶手的都称靠背椅。靠背椅由于搭脑与靠背的变化，常常又有许多式样，也有不同的著称。目前现有的家具椅调节不方便，占用空间较大，使用不舒适。
