酚醛泡沫塑料是近几十年来刚刚开发成功的品种，酚醛泡沫塑料被称为″保温之王″，早期应用于导弹及火箭头的保温，它在美国、英国、日本等一些发达国家已成为塑料中发展最快的品种，消费量迅速增加，应用范围不断扩大。我国于20世纪80年代中期开始起步研发，北京化工大学、济南大学、中国船舶重工七二五所等科研单位在基础研究方面进行了卓有成效的工作，掌握了酚醛泡沫的配方和加工工艺，基本上具备了全面国产化的能力，为这一新材料的推广应用和大规模的产业化奠定了坚实的基础，但因其生产过程中使用酚醛树脂作为主要原料，往往在使用过程中容易挥发出甲醛，对人体健康状况存在严重在威胁。特别是在使用温度超过250℃时，由于粘接剂燃烧会造成玻璃棉作为绝热材料的功能丧失并引起火灾及烟雾、有毒气体的挥发等严重后果。
